ect Favela is an American NGO providing educational services to children living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. With a soaring poverty index and scant educational opportunities, children living in the favelas have no route to opportunity or hope. We teach over 100 children daily. Our preschool curriculum ensures that children ages 4-7 have a quality head start in the overcrowded and under-resourced municipal school. Older school age children who are out of school attend innovative STEM classes emphasizing math and engineering designed to help them compete with their affluent peers just a mile away in expensive private schools. We make magic with very little: what we lack in funding we make up for with our vision and our committed staff. Our dream for 2017 is to expand our preschool programming to yet another favela and offer a fully accredited school to the children living in Rocinha, the largest favela in the Southern Hemisphere.
