At the moment the Trump administration should be focusing on making our country healthier, it is instead taking advantage of an unprecedented public health crisis to do favors for polluters that threaten our public health.
The Trump administration just gutted clean car standards — strong pollution and fuel efficiency standards for automobiles that have helped reduce massive amounts of toxic air and climate pollution from the nation's cars and trucks.
And Trump's EPA just suspended pollution rules and will allow industrial facilities to avoid monitoring and reporting dangerous air pollution, without penalty, during the COVID-19 crisis.
Both rollbacks will cause immense harm to our environment, public health, and the economy, and will undermine efforts to fight climate change.
There is no "right time" to impose higher health and economics costs on the American people — and to do so now, amid a global pandemic, is unconscionable.
Sign this urgent petition of opposition to the White House and Trump's EPA urging them to drop their misguided rollback of critical public health protections right away!
To: President Trump & EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler
I urge you to drop your attacks on clean car standards and the EPA's regulations for industrial pollution emissions at once.
We are in the midst of a massive public health crisis, yet your agencies are advancing reckless policies that hurt our environment, our public health, our climate, and our economy.
Gutting strong clean car standards makes no sense. It will increase toxic air pollution and make people sicker, stall progress in fighting the climate crisis, and increase fuel costs for drivers.
And your easing of enforcement of environmental requirements is an open license to pollute. We can all appreciate the need for additional flexibility in a time of crisis, but this brazen directive is an abdication of the EPA's responsibility to protect our health, and at a time when we need stronger health protections more than ever.
While we believe this move should be reversed, the EPA should at least require companies to publicly disclose when they plan to abandon monitoring and reporting of pollution releases.
Your agencies should be giving their all toward making our country healthier right now. Instead, they are taking advantage of an unprecedented public health crisis to do favors for polluters that threaten public health.
Please drop both of these regulatory rollbacks at once and focus your full attention to combatting the COVID-19 crisis.
have signed.
Let's get to !
