Each of these barriers is compounded by a supervision system that penalizes people for simple mistakes instead of providing them with incentives to build a productive life. This has devastating implications on individuals, families, and communities alike.
Studies show that successful reintegration leads to safer communities. When returning citizens have access to meaningful employment, they're better equipped to build stable lives, contribute positively to society, and break the cycle of recidivism. Nationwide, nearly 44% of people released from prison end up returning in less than a year. It's a shocking number, but it doesn't have to be this way.
